First Visit

Infant Glowing EyesWhat to Expect

Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by age one. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.

The Dental Home is intended to provide a place other than the Emergency Room for parents.

On your child’s very first visit at Dentistry For Kids, our dental Team will welcome you into our jovial office setting. At this initial visit, we invite you to accompany your child into the treatment area while he or she settles into our upbeat practice. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that Dr. Holley and her Team will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.

Your child will have their “teeth counted” (a comprehensive exam) by Dr. Holley. Our dental cleanings are accompanied by oral hygiene instructions specific to your child’s developmental stage. If indicated, your child may even get to “take pictures” (dental radiographs) of their teeth. Our dental Team will explain each step so your child will know exactly what’s next! Toward the end of the visit we will provide you with pertinent feedback regarding your child’s oral health and treatment needs.

During future appointments, we suggest you to allow your child to accompany our Team through the dental experience. We can usually establish a better rapport with your child when you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child’s confidence and overcome apprehension. For the safety and privacy of all patients, other children who are not being treated should remain in the reception room with a supervising adult.

It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle,” “shot,” “pull,” “drill”, or “hurt.” Our office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but that are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. It is our hope that our enthusiasm about promoting great oral health will be contagious!

We strive to make each and every visit to our office a fun one!
