What Is a Retainer?
A retainer is a custom-made oral appliance used to maintain the alignment of your child’s teeth. It will prevent their teeth from shifting back into the wrong positions and keeps their smile properly aligned for optimal oral health, function and appearance. There are several types of retainers available, and our pediatric dentist will review your child’s options with you to find the right type of retainer.
Caring For Your Retainer
Here are a few things we recommend that your child does to care for their retainer after receiving it:
- Wear your retainer as directed by our orthodontist. This may mean wearing it at all times or only at certain times.
- Remove your retainer to eat, but make sure to keep it in its case when you are not wearing it to prevent it from being damaged, lost or thrown away by accident.
- Clean your retainer daily with a toothbrush and lukewarm water to remove a buildup of plaque, tartar and bacteria.
- If your retainer is damaged or broken, please call us immediately.
- Always bring your retainer to your appointments.
- Do not leave your retainer in hot water, on a hot car dashboard, in your pocket, in a washing machine or wrapped in a napkin.
