Orthodontic elastics are small, stretchy loops of latex. Also referred to as rubber bands, they are designed to create additional force for tooth movement and help move your teeth into their proper alignment. This movement may be up and down, back and forth, or side to side. Elastics are intended to make very specific tooth movements while also preventing the surrounding teeth from shifting out of alignment.
Orthodontic elastics are attached to tiny hooks on traditional braces or to buttons created for this purpose on clear aligners. Each of these connection points for your elastics is carefully determined by our orthodontist to help ensure that your teeth move into their proper position as planned. For example, your elastics may hook to one upper tooth and two lower teeth, connect four teeth, or simply stretch between a single upper tooth and a single lower tooth.
Our pediatric dentist and team will review how you are supposed to wear your elastics at the time you receive them. Please make sure to follow all instructions and to wear your elastics continuously as directed. You should only remove your elastics to eat and brush your teeth. You will likely experience some soreness or discomfort when you first begin wearing elastics, but this is normal, and you should not remove your elastics to alleviate your discomfort. Removing the elastics will only slow down and delay your treatment. You should also avoid “doubling up” on elastics, as this could move your teeth into the wrong positions and disrupt your treatment process.
